Stocks don’t like Mondays. This is the third Monday in a row that’s started with a gap down open. And volume has been on the light side each of these Mondays. What does it mean?

Low volume is usually interpreted to mean that there’s little conviction behind a move. That doesn’t mean the move itself can’t be large, just that it likely won’t follow through and may even reverse. Still, I can’t say I’d run out to buy stocks in anticipation of a rebound after yesterday’s drop.

The first signs of the news cycle shifting to a bearish tone are evident this morning. Should we call them bearish "green shoots?" Or "brown shoots?"

Retail sales came in worse than expected this morning. And we’re seeing the market react badly to bad news. That’s as opposed to reacting positively, or putting a positive spin, on bad news like we’ve seen repeatedly over the past two months.

Bloomberg reports that "Fewer jobs, falling home values and the biggest loss of household wealth on record may limit consumers’ ability to spend for years…"

Somebody’s lying. Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis is on the verge of getting sacked because he failed to tell BAC shareholders that he was buying Merrill Lynch for $29 billion while it was losing $15 billion in the fourth quarter of 2008. The revelation that Merrill paid out $3.6 billion in bonuses during that miserable quarter really got shareholders upset.

Once again, the buyers have stepped in at obvious support levels and sent stocks higher. We’ve identified support for the Dow Industrials at around 8,000. And while the index traded below 8,000 this week, the fact that buyers continue to step in remains one of the few positives for stock prices.

The U.S. now comprises just one-third of the world's market capitalization. And in the past few years, global returns handily outpaced those of U.S. issues. But recently -- in spite of all the talk of decoupling -- international markets have suffered right along with our domestic exchanges.

The cheapskate mutual fund investor looks carefully at fees to make sure they match the value received. Some investors, in search of the best possible bargain, look to exchange-traded funds (ETFs) because they have a reputation for being so cheap.
