Bernanke has said it’s time to consider using the second arrow in the Fed’s quiver. That’s the "provision of liquidity" arrow. Maybe the Fed will buy Treasuries. Or maybe the Fed will start doing direct loans to businesses and even consumers. What could go wrong?

Some are saying that Citi is too big to fail. But it sounds to me like its problems are too big to save.

In case anyone is curious, the inflation rate for July of 1981 was 10.76%. A year later, Paul Volcker’s rate hikes had slashed inflation to 6.44%. Speaking of Volcker, his name is certainly being tossed around a lot lately. And not just for his endorsement of Presidential candidate Barrack Obama.
